Love of the game is not enough to get you to play in the NHL, unless you’re willing to settle to be a fan at some games. No, if you want to play on NHL hockey ice, you have to be dedicated to all the time and hard work it takes to make it to the National Hockey League, beginning right now.
Some non-hockey players (even the pros themselves) would call the dedication that’s required to excel at the game of hockey “selfish” but to get to play in the NHL one has to be completely devoted to refining and practicing their hockey training and knowledge. So, are you a fan, or a player?
“When you’re a pro athlete, you’re a real selfish person in the sense that you have to be. And you have to be with the right people because you have to be so dedicated to the game. It’s so, it’s so much tougher I think than the average person thinks or knows, and quite frankly you gotta be a real selfish person. To be a selfish person is to be successful.” —Wayne Gretzky
